We Are Adding Bourke Parakeet To Our Line Up For The 2023 Season. We Will Be Focused On Just A Few Pairs & Working The Rosie And Rubino Genes.
Bourke’s Parrots aka Bourke Parakeets (Neopsephotus Bourkii) are endangered in their own homeland of Southwestern and Central Australia, but are popular in aviculture.
These parakeets are quiet, gentle and unassuming, with very endearing personalities. They are not known to be aggressive with other species – even smaller than themselves (i.e., finches, canaries). However, their gentle nature may make them an easy mark for aggressive birds.
Known as an adorable, gentle, and good-natured species, Bourke's parakeets make good pets when hand-fed as babies, which allows them to bond with their human caretakers.
These are intelligent birds but are also mellow and quiet, especially compared to other parrot species. They are cuddly and prefer companionship; expect a guest riding on your shoulder often. They also get bouts of energy and enjoy flying around.
Life Span 10 to 12 years however have lived into their twenties when well taken care of.
In captivity, most parrot enthusiasts feed their Bourke’s parakeet(s) a seed-based diet. That should be fine for these seed eaters, but it’s important to keep in mind that you can’t just give them a regular dried seed blend and be done with it.
